January 2012 Trip Home To Virginia

Ahhh... what a wonderful sight... watching Texas fall away as I took flight and head back home to Virginia. As is always the case the visit was all too short!

First on the agenda.... a quick nap, followed by a not so quick nap, so that I'll be fully rested for the grand nap. Nuala forced me do it!

During the visit we had the Top Of The Hill Gang over for the NFL playoffs. Good friends, good eats, good games, and as John demonstrates, a good time for a nap. Sue must have taken the picture as I was asleep too.

Another item of business was the annual 5K King William Luminary Night.

I'll say it again..."What a great bunch of neighbors"!

New this year was the fact there was no snow. The general consensus was this made for an evening if not as pretty, a bit more comfortable than in years past.

I missed having the snow!

It was a wonderful visit.... can't wait for the next walk along the James.

Took just three months in this God Forsaken Land of Lewzers!

Driving back to work after lunch Thursday, when I arrived at the intersection in front of the office. I noticed a truck on the cross road that was not going to stop for his red light. I slammed on the brakes and for a fleeting instant thought I might dodge this bullet... No such luck!

This guy's left rear wheel caught my front bumper and tore it almost all the way off.

The Good News
No injuries to either off us, he was driving a company truck and has insurance.

The Bad News
I'm going to spend God knows how long chasing Insurance companies, rental car Co's, repair shops, etc... and I was't even the guy that caused the accident. Just doesn't seem right.

Man I Miss Richmond !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a picture of a creature in the Richmond Fiord. I find it interesting to note the similarity to another picture taken long ago at Loch Ness in Scotland.

Could it be that Nuala has lived in Scotland in a prior life? Or perhaps Richmond has it's very own Monster... a sweet, fluffy, cute one?

Busy Week !

The sun has ris, the sun has set,
And here I is in Texas yet.

I left beautiful Virginia, Susu, Nuala, our little casa on the mesa, and the most wonderful neighbors in the world, Thursday morning August 11th, and headed west. The Dallas adventure had begun.

I convoyed to Dallas with another displaced at&t employee, Roger Bach. I can't imagine I was very pleasant company for poor Roger, I have complained incessantly about having to make this move ever since it became known the Richmond office was being closed. Sue reminds me that I shouldn’t complain as it could be far worse. Roger found out his 16 year old son has bone cancer in his arm just about a week prior to the announcement of the office closing. I can't imagine carrying around that type of baggage at a time like this. I look at his situation and feel awful that I think I can complain. I've come to realize that I am quite fortunate in my situation but it hasn't stopped me from complaining all the more.

Roger and I took 2 days to make the journey from Richmond to Dallas with a stop overnight in Jackson TN.

We arrived in Dallas late Friday afternoon after a scare about 2 hours out. Roger had pulled off the highway about 5 miles in front of me and called back to let me know where to meet him. A few minutes later he called and said his car had stalled and wouldn't start again and he had coasted into a gas station. We managed to get the car restarted after about half an hour and drove it to a mechanic who ran a diagnostic on the car and said it told him a wiring harness had come loose and pin number 10 on the harness was not making good contact. The harness was in the back of Rogers car buried under about a thousand pounds of Cra_! The mechanic suggested we move some of the junk up to the front of the car to see if relieving the pressure might solve the problem. We will never know if that was really the fix or not but Roger made it the 2 hours into Dallas with no further issues. I made it in time to get the keys for my apartment and didn't have to spend the night in another hotel.

And here I is in Texas yet!

The weekend of the 13th and 14th was spent unpacking, hard to imagine it took that long with so few belongings. I did spend some of the time driving around to get the lay of the land and picking up odds and ends that I didn't bring along with me.

Monday the 15th I started at the new office in Dallas. Not as bad as I'd heard but nothing like Richmond. I'm going to be hard pressed to enjoy myself out here! There Is one bright spot and that's the fact the office is only 6 blocks from the apartment. Once I feel comfortable with the environs I'll try to ride the bike over. That might make a small dent in my carbon footprint.

Friday the 19th I headed over to El Centro College and started the ball rolling on getting back to school. I was back Saturday with student ID in hand and took the "Accuplacer" exam which determines what subjects need remedial work. Boy.... Do I feel like an idiot! Must be like the Army in that they tear you down then build you back up again. I did OK in English and basic math, but suck in Algebra and my knowledge of using the computer for word processing and Power Point. The upside is that I know I can ace Algebra, and learning more about using the computer shouldn't be a problem.

My plan is to enroll for the Fall session and knock out the prerequisites needed for the Nursing program, hopefully within the next two years.

If I'm lucky at&t will offer another package inside of 2 years and I can jump on it and head back to Richmond to finish School. I want to be back there by hook or crook in two years max!

Today Sunday August 21st. I started by sleeping in until 8:45AM and missing the 9AM Mass.

C'est la vie.

Last Sunday I tried the mass at Holy Trinity, maybe a 10 minute drive from the apartment, and was pleased with the choice. I was able to hear the sermon and homily without working at it. Today's mass at Saint Thomas Aquinas was a bust. Couldn't hear any of the mass, and the people just didn't seem as friendly. It might have been a bit closer but for my money I think I'll head back over to Trinity.

After mass I went back to the apartment and took the bike out for a spin around White Rock Lake. The Ride for Jim final ride was today so I thought this would be a nice tribute. I had a couple take a pic of me in my Ride for Jim jersey and then somehow managed to delete the file. What a boob!

Not a mile out from the apartment I manages to unclip my right foot for a stop signal and then leaned to the left. SPLAT! That's the Polack in me at work.

When I got back to the apartment I dressed my wounded knee using the 1st aid supplies sweet Susu sent along. I suppose she knew she was sending me away with all sorts of sharp and pokey things for the kitchen, not to mention the bike. 1400 miles away and the woman can still take care of me.

Army Navy Game 2010...

I snuck out at midnight the night prior and hung the Army flag off the Coski's front banister... John's comment to Ruth Ann the next morning, "We've been provoked". (Priceless) As you can see, they've added an amendment.

As we set up for the days event I told Sue that we didn't need a chair for John as he would be down on the floor with Nuala. He did not prove me to be a liar.

This was the first event to be held in the recently upgraded Bird Theater down in the Man Cave.

Sue and I joined our guests Mike and Pam, along with John and Ruth Ann in enjoying a wonderful spread. The Coski's brought along a plate of Pigs in a Blanket, a loaf of John's yummy bread, and RA's spicy cheese "cookies" . Mike and Pam supplied Mike's famous Moonlight Movie Popcorn, and Susu whipped up a crock pot of corny chili with cheese. For those with room for it, we had Apple Pie a la mode, and Cheese Cake.
RA impressed us all with her half time Flying Wallendas Power Nap.

True to form, the Snow Gods delivered the goods.

In a post last year I mentioned that December 5th seemed to be a date when we have seen the first measurable snow in several of the past years.

2009 was a bust, and 2010 didn't appear to be holding any promise for snow, in any amount, by that date. Weather forecasts last week suggested a chance, then as the date drew near the forecasters began to waffle. By yesterday it looked like we might just see flurries, if that, and any accumulating snow would be to our south.

Not to be dissuaded, we started the Tiki Snow Dance.

And VOILA !

Not much more than a dusting, but more important than that, it occurred on that magical date December 5th. (to be honest, the snow started on the evening of the 4th and continued into the wee hours of the 5th)

The only thing that would have made this better would have been to share the moment with the grand kids and some of their iced sugar cookies.

Thanksgiving 2010 Robin & Jenn, Richmond VA

Just as it should be, upon arrival Wednesday eve, the Sees Milk Bordeaux are served. Robin, Jenn, and Sue gabbed until the wee hours. I went to bed in prep for the Turkey Trot in the AM.

Thanksgiving started with the annual Richmond Road Runners 10K Turkey Trot, and I was happy with my times, a 10:10 per mile pace... Not bad for an old codger.

Once I got back home the girls had most everything ready for the impending feast, and all I had to do was fire up the grill and chuck the turkey in.

Then it was off to the rivah with the Robin, Jenn, Nuala, and JJ. Those pups made the Tasmanian Devil look slow.

Back at the house after the puppies swim we tied up a few loose ends... unfinished brewskis, carving the bird, baking Jenn's Pumpkin Cake, checking Blackberries, and posing for the obligatory pre-feast photo.

The Guests of Honor Robin and Jenn, along with a picture of the puppies having worn themselves out on the deck.

Friday started off rainy and slow which was just fine with everyone. By midday the rain had moved east and we took a 2 mile walk to the Forest Hill Park lake, the river, and back to the house, The puppies of course made good use of the water and assorted sticks they found.

OBSERVATION: Puppies never ever get tired.

Fall Finery

This years fall colors seem to be somewhat subdued, I suspect because of the long, hot, and dry summer we had. I will say however, that just when I start thinking the colors are looking a bit anemic, I'll come around a bend and see a tree that is so colorful, and so bright, I'd swear it had to be plugged in.

Inspired by grandson Ezra's "My Autumn Eyes" poem, I humbly offer the following Haiku, and dedicate it to my four wonderful grandchildren, Alex, Ezra, Kian, and Eden.

Nuala's First 10K

Nuala took part in her first 10K run Monday morning... if she had known what she was about to partake in I don't think we would have progressed much farther than Belle Island. I've wanted to try the North Bank Trail for sometime now and Monday seemed like a good day to give it a try. Perfect weather and temps in the high 40's to low 50's. (Clockwise from Top left) We started on our normal South Bank Trail and took that from the Nickle Bridge down to Belle Island where Nuala took a dip to cool off. Then it was over the Lee Bridge to the North Bank Trail head. The North Bank Trail runs from the Tredager Iron Works West past the Hollywood Cemetery, through a residential neighborhood for about half a mile, then past Maymont. The trail takes you past Maymont's Japanese Gardens, and the bear enclosure... alas, no bear to view this time. At Maymont the trail climbs out of the river and up to the North side of the Nickel Bridge and a short jog back to the house.

I think the run might have tuckered out the pup just a bit. She took a nap from about 1pm till 4pm and only moved to either change the bed or her position in the bed. I would be lying if I told you I didn't do the very same thing.
Heck.... We deserved it!!!

Last Saturday, John and Ruth Ann invited the "Top of the Hill Gang" to join along in a fall road trip out to Madison County, VA. First stop, Yoder's for sandwiches and drinks... I'm still salivating thinking of all the tempting pies & pastries. Lunch in hand we continued up the road to the home of Bob Tierney, long time friend of John & Ruth Ann. Bob's home is located at the base of Old Rag Mountain, a very popular hiking destination in VA. We all sat and enjoyed lunch and each others company out on Bob's deck. Betty, Bob's dog, also made an appearance and plenty of friends.
Those with keen eyes may have noticed that "Bobby" our traveling gnome was along for the ride...top of the Yoder's sign.

A special treat was a chance to view some of the art work of the late Tucker Hill, another close friend of the Coski's who lived with Bob until he passed away.

After lunch we piled into the cars and headed to our next stop, the DuCard vineyard for some wine tasting. Bobby hung out at the sign.

Sue has had it in her mind for sometime now that Nuala would enjoy a trip to the beach. I'm not so sure that it wasn't Sue channeling her desires through Nuala.
In any event, Nuala got her wish and we traveled down to Sandbridge, VA for the day.

The end of September saw the annual neighborhood lawn aerating get together. Mike and I picked up the machine and with the help of those able to pitch in, knocked out approx 13 lawns in around four hours. Kids of all ages entertained themselves during the process at the Krispy Kreme, coffee, and juice bar.

Bobby does Virginia

Anyone who's heard the stories of the Garden Gnome swiped from a garden and turning up in pictures all over the world, can appreciate the story behind Bobby.

It seems Vickie, (Baseball player Thomas Neal's mom), was at her brothers visiting and he had these plastic wrestling figures that he's painted black and set up along the driveway, (Sounds like quite the character). Vickie thought it'd be great fun to steal one and see what her brother did when he found out it was missing.
Bobby was the figure Vickie absconded with after leaving a ransom note.
Vickie then decided to taunt her brother by sending him pictures of Bobby at locations Vickie visited in her travels.
After telling the story to Sue the girls decided to expand Bobby's travels in a most unusual way... Bobby was cloned.
Sue found a Bobby figure out here in VA at one of those Big Box dime stores, took it home, and painted it black. The rest, as they say, is history.

Bird Theater Double Feature

Our Last Moonlight Movies turned into a double feature. We started off with the Jenkins boys pick Endless Summer II, a surfing extravaganza.
When that was over and nobody seemed to want to leave I ran a couple of Shorts to entertain the kids. When it became evident that the party was not over I gave up and ran the movie Monsters Inc.
We dispersed just shy of midnight.

The local Ride for Jim Block Party and Final Ride have become a fun if not grueling annual event. This was my third year and it was nice to see it grow from the 13 final riders in 2008, to the 80 plus riders this year.

Guess Nuala got just a little to close to the fauna... The Great Blue Heron and a Mallard decide it was time to vacate this spot on the river.

Then the topper... a visit from another denizen of the forest.... Mr. Beaver. This guy walked right up like he hadn't a care in the world and for a moment stopped not three feet away and closed his eyes. I suspect he was heading home after an exhausting all-nighter.

Practice riding the skateboard, dejavu, practice some more, and practice, practice, practice.... must be some cute girls he's going to try to impress at the Fourth of July parade.

The really BIG Westover Hills, they close down the streets for the morning, Parade!!!

Among the thousands of floats, bands and dignitaries marching down the parade route were some really cute kids! Throw in some of the beautiful people like Dr's Dave and Kelsey Salley... just can't get any better than this!

The rest of June played out in similar fashion.... lots and lots to do!

Saturdays the crew assembles for a trip to Blanchard's, the Farmers Market, or both. Hadley and Papa Mike stay cool on the front porch, Alex finds the sprinkler to be his cup of tea.

The Robin's next and it's occupants were right outside Alex's bedroom window so he had roommates until they fledged and left the nest.

Alex points out the Red Sonic Rooster Tail he used to haul in his bass.

The Crew enjoys another great evening of entertainment at Forest Hills Music in the Park series.

Alex and Nuala have become best buds!

Susu and Alex found a Polka broadcast that must have been great entertainment... they talked about it for days!

As is usually the case, the breakfast was great at Paradise Cafe.

A trip to DC wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Air and Space museum.

Susu and Alex made the trip via train from Richmond... as you can see Alex made himself feel right at home. The beautiful Union Station.

Part of the crew took in a Squirrels game.... it was an exciting game but alas, the Squirrels came up short.... sniffle! In attendance were Alex, Susu, Poppy, Mike House, Mike and Pam Schwartz, Lindsay and John Farner, and the irrepressible John and Ruth Ann Coski.

Well it's about time....

I'm not to concerned about the fact I haven't kept this update like I might have liked... I'm sure the two followers won't mind.

* Early June *

Susu's pop Walt came to town for a visit and short stay. They took in a Squirrels game and Walt met the west coast connection and left fielder Thomas Neal. The art museum was also visited and Sue took her Dad to Rockets Landing for dinner.

Sue took a trip up to PA to visit with her Mom and Pop and relatives galore!

Back in Richmond, Sue and the girls got together for a "Girls Night Out" and took in the latest Sex in the City, Chick Flick.

The girls all met before the movie in our front yard and were served Dr. Dave's Famous Cosmopolitans by Dr. Dave himself no less. Note the Doc in Tux shirt and bow tie displaying his usual aplomb.

The children all spent the evening with the dads over at Derek's... I suspect Beer and Pizza was the choice at that venue. Mike and I, having no little ones, took in a Squirrels game at the Diamond.

Grandson Alex has joined us for the summer and took in an impromptu King William Crew get together down at O'Toole's, visited the Rivah with Nuala, was smooched by Nuala, and went to the Saturday morning Farmers Market.

House Wren

During his visit last summer, our Grandson Alex built a fine cedar Wren house and hung it up in the back yard. I noticed on Saturday a pair of House Wrens had started to prepare the house for their impending brood. I imagine they will be sitting on eggs by the time Alex arrives for his visit in a few weeks.

On a side note... Ezra's bird house has had two families of House Sparrows so far this year.

Hard to imagine that I was just 23 when I had my very first child... not more than a child myself. It changed my life forever and for the better.

I remember taking you home from the hospital and thinking that everyone around me was just driving way too fast!

I remember cleaning everything you came in contact with to the point that any attached microbe had a better chance surviving on the face of the sun.

I remember your first belly laugh, how it made me feel faint, and how we whisked you out of the store all the while trying to get you to do it again.

I remember your first steps and how everything in the house became so sharp and pointy looking.

I remember getting a rush of adrenaline each time you'd fall and thinking my heart wasn't going to be able to survive it all.

I remember trials and tribulations you went through that were oh so important at the time, and how I wished I could make them all go away.

Most of all I remember all the fun times we've had, how proud I am of who you've become, and how excited I am to see what life has in store for you.

Robin, we love you more that you will ever know. Happy Birthday dear one.

Our Busy May Day.

We had lots to do on this May Day!

The day began with a walk down to Forest Hill Park for the first Farmers Market after the winter break. Susu grabbed us breakfast at her favorite taco stand and we washed it all down with Blanchard's coffee. We also picked up some local honey, a pecan pie, strawberries and some herbs for Sue's herb garden.

Among the throngs that descended on the event we found neighbors Pam and Mike Schwartz, Dave Belde with twins Sophie and Lilly, (or is it Lilly and Sophie?), and Derek Andresen with Ian and Mia in tow. The kids provided free entertainment, dancing and singing, as we took relief from the hot sun in the shade of one of the park shelters.

After the market Sue, Nuala, and I walked over to the river and Nuala took a dip to cool off.

And after all that, some of us managed to squeeze a bit more fun into the day with a trip to the Diamond for a Richmond Flying Squirrels ballgame. Susu as you might have noticed, is in tight with the mascot Nutsy. Cheering on the home team with us were John & Ruth Ann Coski, Mike and Pam, ("Fast Hands" Mike, took away a souvenir shot into the stands between innings), Mia and Grandpa Tom.

Have you ever started a day that seemed to be pretty routine, and then found yourself in a little slice of heaven?

This morning was just such a day.

Nuala and I started a morning walk, and instead of our usual stroll through the neighborhood to Forest Hill Park we detoured to the river instead. We walked the four blocks to the Nickle Bridge and dropped down to the river on the Buttermilk bike trail. Once we were at waters edge I took Nuala off leash and cut her loose to sniff to her hearts content. I know she thought she was in heaven! We walked along the river for about half a mile to where the 42nd street overpass is located and boulder hopped out to a shoreline island. We worked our way downstream about 100 yards and came out at a sandy beach in a calm part of the river. Nuala was aching to get into the water so I had her swim out and fetch sticks I'd thrown upstream.

It's hard to imagine that this tranquil little spot is less than 2 miles from city center and all its hustle and bustle.

As I sat there with a soggy and oh so happy puppy, and looked out over the river with its busting at the seams green, flora, and watched a family of geese swim by it was easy to feel very blessed. If all this could be packaged somehow, a man could make a million!

Sue and I took a trip to DC Friday afternoon and caught a Dodgers vs Nationals game at the new National stadium. We drove up to the the Franconia/Springfield Metro stop and took the Metro up to the park in order to avoid the parking crush before and after the game. Two thumbs up for that Idea!!

The Metro station was one block from the Center Field entrance to the Ball Park and you could see the stadium as soon as you exited the station... lovely!. Having been away from pro sports for so long here in sleepy Richmond, I was immediately caught up in the excitement and carnival like atmosphere that seemed to pour out of the park swirling around you then sucking you back towards the stadium and it's magical allure.

I was reminded of the James Earl Jone's character in Field of dreams and his description of why people will come to see the field of dreams.

They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it, for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers, sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The Memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant throughout the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But Baseball has marked the time.This field, this game, it's part of our past Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Like a duck to water, Nuala takes the plunge.

Today was the perfect day for a trip to the Rivah.

We've often wondered if the Lab in Nuala would kick in someday and turn her into a true water dog. She's enjoyed playing in the water but has never been comfortable enough to take the full plunge. That is, until today.

Nuala started her water play as she usually does, wading through the shallows, and biting at the rivulets flowing between the rocks. It wasn't until Sue had the bright idea of including in the game one of Nuala's true loves, a stick, that the water play took a turn towards the inevitable.

We started by throwing the stick into the shallows then slowly worked if farther out, and into deeper water until, Voila, Nuala came into her own and became a true Labrador Retriever.

Reminded me of watching my kids walk for the first time.

Next will be training her to retrieve the newspaper... from the neighbors house down the street.

After her swim it was time to dry off, loll in the sun, have treats, and gnaw the ubiquitous stick.

The King William Crew got together this last Sunday for a Round of Golf at the Belmont Golf Course, followed by lunch at a local Sports Bar and Grill, followed by the Masters Tournament down in the Man Cave.

The Belmont G. C. it turns out has some remarkable history in that it was host to the PGA Championship back in 1949. Sam Snead, (VA), was the winner in that event.

My sister Julie called me the other day to let me know she was in DC for business. Good timing as I had the following day off. Alas, I left Richmond at 3 PM and didn't arrive in DC until 7 PM.

4 hours to do 90 miles!

Sorry Kiddo, you didn't get much of a nickel tour, we had just enough time to go to dinner down in Chinatown.

We had a nice chat though and were able to catch up on all the who's doing what news.

I suggest next time we do this right and have you come when there's no work to do.

When my Mercedes mechanic shuttered his business I decided it was time to look for a new set of wheels. So I took back my Civic and set Susu up in a CRV EX-L. She now has the warmest buns in town, (not to mention the cutest), thanks to the heated seats. Good timing too, as it's snowing again.

Big Al's Big Spill was a Big Scare!

On Alex's second day in snowboard class I received a call and voice mail while skiing the mountain that requested my presence at the Ski Patrol medical hut at the base of the mountain. Seems Big Al had taken a spill and bonked his noggin.

The good news was that Alex was wearing a helmet at the insistence of Grandma Susu. Even so the Dr's manning the clinic said it appeared he had suffered a very mild concussion. Thus ended Alex's days on the mountain.

Quite time back at the condo was the Dr's orders.

Al is doing quite nicely at the time this is being posted.

So.... instead of packing for the trip to Park City we are trying to make the best of the situation. As it turns out, our flight out of Richmond was cancelled as were 80% of all flights, I suspect this figure was higher. The revised itinerary has us leaving Monday afternoon barring an asteroid striking earth.

In the meantime, some of the King William Crew spent a few hours together down at O'Tooles for Brunch.

When they talk about the luck of the Irish I sometimes wonder why I always seem to get the Bad Luck.

Here we are sliding into a weeks ski vacation in Park City Utah and for weeks now I've been watching the snow reports for the area. Looks like we're in for a great time what with all the snow they've been getting.

That is, IF we can get there.

Turns out the Mid Atlantic is in the cross hairs of the storm that's been causing havoc from New Mexico to Arkansas.

The forecast calls for significant accumulations, 6 to 10 inches, in this area starting Friday evening and all day Saturday. While normally I would be looking forward to this event, I find that now I am dreading the very real possibility that this turns the trip to the airport early Sunday morning into a nightmare.

I can only hope the plows are out doing their thing all day Saturday, and that I can make it out of the neighborhood and onto a plowed road in the early AM Sunday.

I told the boys I thought it would be OK if they went back to the station and that I didn't see a need for them to remain parked across the street.

Fire Chief Schmedlap said they had a directive from adjacent neighbors and Sue to remain in place until Sue returned.

"The Blizzard of 2009" as it's being called by the media, (they spin everything), turned out to be a pretty good snow producer. When it was all said and done we had 7 to 8 inches of snow here on the block. To the uninitiated this may not seen like very much but it actually brings to a grind, much of ones day to day activities. Driving becomes a dicey affair at best so if you can't walk to where you need to be, you might as well forget about going. Luckily we live in a neighborhood that is within walking distance of a handful of restaurants and a couple of drugstores.

First stop Saturday morning was Blanchard's Coffee Shop. Sue, Nuala, and I were joined this morning by neighbors Mike and Pam Schwartz, Mike House, John and Ruth Ann Coski.

We had the coffee shop to ourselves until some special visitors arrived, Molly and Ann Casen Blanchard, and the BG's, (Belde girls), Lily and Sophie.

After coffee it was back to the neighborhood... there was work to be done, shoveling the walks was the priority. As you can see, Nuala chose to supervise.

When the work was done it was time to play. The Andresen kids, Ian and Mia, with help from mom Heather, built a wonderful snowman. He was a dandy!

Then for no reason other than to be able to say that I'd done it, I strapped on the skis and made a couple runs down Prince Arther. The conditions were pretty bad, (no doubt why cars aren't used to groom ski runs), and I almost took Susu and myself out on the second attempt.

All this work and fun made for some hearty appetites so a bunch of us headed back down the street for lunch and some cold ones at O'Tooles Pub. After lunch and a couple beers a nap seemed in order. I headed for the couch and the others rested and recharged so we would have the energy to partake in "Luminary Night" to be held that evening at dusk.

Well, It's official. For the 8th straight year, (a record), Navy has walked off with the Brass Ring. For the records the score was Navy 17 - Army 3. Army fans can take some consolation in the fact that Army had the lead for the entire 1st half of the game. SNIFF!

December 5th, a date that will live in infam.... No, that's December 7th.

In any event, it will be noted in the annals of Richmond snowfalls that it did indeed snow on this date in 2009.

The records will reflect that the precipitation was in the form of snow flurries and that there was no accumulation. Oh, and that this was Nuala's first snowfall. Huzzah!!

I was only able to capture the falling flakes on film, (say that three times really fast), using the flash, which turned them into the ghostly apparitions you see here.

Nuala it turns out was unimpressed with the snow and found her joy in a stick.

Anyone that knows me knows that I enjoy following the weather, some might say obsessively.

I am especially fascinated with winter and the prospects of snow, no doubt because it was so rare in Southern California, and Phoenix.

Well, the drum beat for the first snowfall for the 2009-2010 season is growing louder and the prognosticators are saying that this coming Saturday looks to be a good bet.

Tuesday was the first mention of the white stuff on the local forecast with 44 the high, 27 the low, with a 50% chance of rain/snow.

Wednesday the changed it to 43 the high, 26 the low, with a 50% chance of showers.

Today, Thursday, they predict 43 the high, 25 the low, and 90% chance rain/snow.

Having kept track of our Snowfalls going back to the 2002-2003 season I can tell you that our first snowfalls with any accumulation to speak of were as follows:

2002-2003 December 4th thru 5th Started 9pm 6 inches.

2003-2004 / 2004-2005 Both in Dayrunners and filed away, Curses!

2005-2006 December 5th 3-4 inches

2006-2007 January 18th AM (Dusting)

2007-2008 December 5th (Dusting)

2008-2009 January 19th (Dusting)

Interesting to note that the 2002, 2005, and 2007 events were all on December 5th and this Saturday is December 5th 2009.

Thanksgiving visit day three, The finale.

The last day of Robin and Jenn's visit began with a visit to a favorite breakfast spot of ours, Paradise Diner. Not only did we enjoy a scrumptious meal but our guests graciously picked up the tab.

Then it was off to look over the Rivah down the street at Pony Pastures.

After leaving Pony Pastures and taking the scenic route along Riverside Drive, we ended up at the University of Richmond campus and took a leisurely stroll around the lake.

After U of R we drove the girls down Monument Avenue and ended up in Carrytown. There we stopped for Ice Cream at Bev's after walking through some of Sue's favorite shops.
After Carrytown it was back to the casa to finish packing, and have Nuala demonstrate, one last time, the proper lap dog form.

Then as the saying goes, "All good things must come to an end". We said our goodbyes, packed the girls into the car and took them to the airport here in Richmond. There we said our goodbyes again, (sniff), and watched the girls disappear through the security checkpoint and off to their gate.

We had a great time and were both glad to entertain as well as to be entertained by our two very special guests.

Thanks loads Robin and Jenn, Love you, and we'll see you in Park City come February if not sooner.

Thanksgiving visit day two

Day two of the girls visit began early. Robin and Jenn joined Sue and I for the Saturday morning coffee run and since Blanchard's was closed for the holiday we decided to walk to Crossroads. We were joined this Saturday by neighbors John and Ruth Ann Coski, Mike and Pam Schwartz (they drove), and Dave Belde with his twins Sophie and Lilly. Crossroads was the original coffee haunt until Blanchard's opened up right around the corner, and is still a destination when we crave ice cream, malted shakes, pastries, and a quick breakfast or lunch.

After Crossroads we headed over to the Farmers Market at Forest Hill Park by way of the newly renovated Forest Hill Park Lake. This was a chance to show off the newest slice of Richmond to our guests.

Some of us did some shopping at the Farmers Market, while others had breakfast at one of the many vendors serving food, then it was back home for a little rest before the evenings activities.

Saturday Evening we tried out a new restaurant, The Boathouse at Rockets Landing, that is down in the Shockoe Bottoms area of Richmond. We had eaten at a sister restaurant that many of our past guests are familiar with, The Boathouse at Sunday Park, which over looks the Swift Creek Reservoir out near my 1st apartment in Midlothian, VA. We knew the food and setting for the Sunday Park restaurant was superb and found the new addition to the chain to be outstanding as well.

After dinner picture standing on the landing outside the restaurant and looking North west over the James River towards the Richmond city lights. A wonderful end to a wonderful day with our wonderful guests!

Sigh.... it's going to quickly!

Side note: This is truly a miracle to have this posted so soon after the initial post for the girls visit. I'd like to think I'm getting the hang of this but I know me all too well.... It's indeed a miracle.

Special Guests For Thanksgiving Arrive

A special treat for us this Thanksgiving was a visit from our eldest daughter Robin and her friend Jenn.

After spending the holiday with Jenn's family up in Ohio, Robin and Jenn flew into Dulles and our Nations Capitol, where Sue and I picked them up.

First stop on their whirlwind visit.... The White House.

We flirted with rain from IAD down to the White House and were beginning to think we were going to have to amend the itinerary. It took about 10 minutes to locate parking and as we left the garage the luck of the Irish smiled down and brought an end to the rain. We were even blessed with sunshine.

As we walked to the White House Sue mentioned this was the day they were going to deliver the White House Christmas tree. As we arrived on the north side of the capitol grounds I noticed they had security out in force and were not allowing the public to stand at the north fence, in fact everyone was being kept at the north side of Pennsylvania Ave. It turns out we had walked up just as the tree was arriving.... what a nice surprise!

Side note: My theory is the State Dinner party crashers breached security at this point and were stowed away like Chip and Dale inside the tree.

After watching the Xmas tree get wheeled into the WH grounds, (no we didn't see the Obama girls), we decided to walk around to the south side to see if we could get up to the fence there. As it turns out the security on the south side was relaxed enough to allow us to get up to the fence. Alas, the White House was obscured by a huge tent that had been put up for the State Dinner.

We were able to see the Cheesy National Christmas Tree, which is always wrapped so tight with lights it becomes hermetically sealed, and push the Welcome to the White House door bell.

It was then on to China Town and dinner with the girls at "Eat First" a Chinese restaurant our good friend Shawn had introduced us to. After dinner it was off to Richmond.

Another side note: This Blog entry has taken me four days and an evening to complete with multiple attempts to get it right each day. It may be years before I get the rest of the girls trip posted. Say a prayer for my sanity, what little of it there is left!

...and a few more reasons to love your 33 year old.

*Amazes us all with the things he can accomplish.

*Is extemely inquisitive, and shares what he learns with all of us (ad nauseam). Ha... I just had to add that, and I hope you know I'm kidding!

*Has a great sense of humor, and I'm sure found the comment above quite humorous.

Oh, and did I mention he looks Great in feathers!

I remember back in the day when Nuala was only 8 Lbs and meeting the neighbors for the first time. It wore her and Poppy out!

This was Nuala's first trip to the Rivah. Although she was tentative about getting in the water, eventually the Lab in her took over and she waded right in.

Sue and I hired a trainer for Nuala, Betty Rose the wife of the Vet and a real dog whisperer. Betty made a couple of suggestions with regards to a lead and harness and within minutes of using the new equipment Nuala was ready for the Westminster Dog Show.

I got a kick out of these pictures. They were taken weeks apart but I guess little boys, Kian in this case, and puppies think, and play a lot alike.

We used to have a puppy !!!

These were taken on a trip to the local park to visit the refurbished lake. We made the mistake of taking her after we had given her a bath. Note to self... If you take Nuala to water she will play in the water.

Oh, and as for our "puppy" dog.... 30 Lbs. and growing!

Back in the end of August Sue sent me a Cell PIX message from the SPCA and I was introduced to "Carla". Unbeknownst to us at the time "Carla" was soon to become a part of the family.

I say unbeknownst knowing full well that as soon as I saw the Picture I knew Sue had found our puppy. I think Sue knew as well.

Sue and I went to the SPCA that evening and well after closing, returned home with our new charge

First order of business, a name!

Sue and I both thought "Carla" looked like a baby seal. Sue recalled that a character in a movie we both enjoyed, The Secret Of Roan Inish, was a Selkie. (Selkies as the story goes, are able to transform to human form by shedding their seal skins, and can return to seal form by putting it back on). The Selkie's name in the movie was Nuala.

And so, Carla became Nuala.
